Book Summary

From Jason Rekulak, Edgar-nominated author of The Impossible Fortress, comes a wildly inventive spin on the classic horror story in Hidden Pictures, a supernatural thriller about a woman working as a nanny for a young boy with strange and disturbing secrets.

Fresh out of rehab, Mallory Quinn takes a job as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy.

Mallory immediately loves it. She has her own living space, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual fare: trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest, dragging a woman’s lifeless body.

Then, Teddy’s artwork becomes increasingly sinister, and his stick figures quickly evolve into lifelike sketches well beyond the ability of any five-year-old. Mallory begins to wonder if these are glimpses of a long-unsolved murder, perhaps relayed by a supernatural force.

Knowing just how crazy it all sounds, Mallory nevertheless sets out to decipher the images and save Teddy before it’s too late.

My Review

I absolutely loved this horror/thriller! After reading so many disappointing horror books, especially ones that make you believe something supernatural is happening only to reveal that it was never supernatural at all, this was such a refreshing change. Finally, a horror story with an actual supernatural element! It was gripping, spooky, atmospheric, and kept me guessing from beginning to end. It was also the perfect read for the Halloween season!

As far as content goes, there was a little strong language but no spice and surprisingly little gore. For a horror novel, I actually thought it was pretty tame. I had put off reading this book for quite a while because I was worried it would be too disturbing for me, but that wasn’t the case at all. I wish I had picked it up sooner!

I did a tandem read, listening to the audiobook while following along with the digital version, and I HIGHLY recommend experiencing the story this way. If you can, definitely pick up a physical or digital copy because there are illustrations throughout the book that really add to the storytelling. And let me tell you, some of those pictures are seriously creepy! They added another layer of eeriness and made the entire experience even more immersive. The audiobook narrator was also fantastic. She gave the different characters distinct voices and did an incredible job bringing the story to life. Reading and listening together made this such a fun and memorable experience.

And can we talk about that ending?! WOW! I never could have predicted where this story was going, and that big twist completely caught me off guard! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, trying to piece everything together, and I genuinely couldn’t figure out what was happening. What a wild ride! The tension, the creeping sense of dread, the unsettling atmosphere, and the supernatural elements were all so well done. This book actually delivered on the horror, which is exactly what I was hoping for.

I don’t want to give away too much about the plot because I truly believe this is one of those books that’s best experienced knowing as little as possible. Just go in blind and enjoy the ride!

I absolutely loved this book, and it has easily earned a spot among my all-time favorite horror reads. The hype is REAL, and now I completely understand why so many readers rave about it. I can’t recommend it enough, especially if you love a spooky, suspenseful story with genuine supernatural elements and twists you won’t see coming.

I can’t wait to read more from this author. He’s officially earned a spot on my auto-read author list. What an incredible reading experience!
