Summary

Cassie Beckett’s life is anything but magical. With a wild younger sister, three unruly kids, and an absent husband, she’s really not looking forward to the witching month of October. At least the gorgeous, foggy Prince Edward Island is always quiet.

That is, until the vampires arrive.

As the creatures sink their teeth into Cassie’s tenuous grip on normalcy, she’s forced to come face-to-face with long–disregarded family secrets. The legacy gifts her with power, but also a lofty rid the island of vampires, or let them win. (Both options suck, in more ways than one.)

Armed with her family, newfound friends, and a baby in a spectacularly garlicky onesie, Cassie must learn what it is to be a witch and how to fight for what she loves before time runs out. Because on Halloween night, the stakes will be higher than ever before…and it’s up to Cassie to finish what the witches that came generations before her started.

My Review

After enjoying Auralee Wallace’s In the Company of Witches, I had high expectations for The Late-Night Witches. While it didn’t completely meet those expectations, it was still an enjoyable and entertaining read.

I went in hoping for a light-hearted, cozy witchy fantasy, and this book delivered, though with a bigger dose of humor than I anticipated. I laughed out loud more than once. A baby in a garlic onesie? Absolutely hilarious!

The family dynamics, especially the sisterly relationship, were charming and heartwarming, creating a delightful mix of humor and emotion. The story has just a touch of romance and mild gore, but nothing graphic. Some minor language appears, but there are no spicy scenes. The pacing is slow at first, but the second half picks up nicely.

My main disappointments were the lack of witches versus vampire battles and the fact that the main vampire leaned more toward cheesy than scary. I didn’t fully connect with any of the characters, and the story sometimes felt a bit cheesier and less deep than I would have liked. The ending also felt anticlimactic.

That said, if you’re looking for a silly, light, and fun Halloween read that will make you cackle and grin, this is a perfect choice. It has a vibe reminiscent of Charmed meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with plenty of nods to the show and movie sprinkled throughout.

Definitely recommend! I can’t wait to see what this author writes next!
