Heidi: A Graphic Novel
by Mariah Marsden and Ofride

Summary
When young Heidi is sent to live with her grandfather in a small shepherd’s hut in the Swiss Alps, everyone expects him to turn her away. He has a bad mean, growly, and harsh as the cold mountain winds. But Heidi is quick to take on any challenge, whether it’s keeping an eye on the rebellious goats, learning to read, or melting Grandfather’s icy heart.
Heidi’s adventures take her up and down her beloved mountain, from picnics in the high alpine meadows all the way to the distant streets of Frankfurt and a city life she could never have imagined. But when homesickness strikes, Heidi must weigh old friendships with new ones and find her place in an expanding world.
My Review
This sweet and charming graphic novel is part of a trilogy based on classic middle grade stories. I had already read the adaptations of The Secret Garden and Anne of Green Gables, so I knew I wanted to complete the series with Heidi.
I grew up reading Heidi and watching several adaptations over the years, so I was already familiar with the story going into this. What I loved most was seeing how the adapter and illustrator brought this classic tale to life in such a fresh way. While the art style was not entirely my favorite, it was still beautiful, and the vibrant colors made every page feel warm and inviting. Some pages felt a little crowded with speech bubbles and text, but it never became difficult to follow. It was visually engaging from beginning to end, and I think most children could easily pick this up and enjoy it.
If you’re in a spring or summer reading mood, or simply looking for something with cozy cottagecore vibes, this is the perfect graphic novel to pick up during the warmer months. It works wonderfully as a companion to the original story. After finishing this version, I even listened to the audiobook of the classic because it put me right back in the mood for the world of Heidi.
All three graphic novels in this series are available on Kindle Unlimited, which made them so easy to access. Highly recommend!
