Summary

The magic of L.M. Montgomery’s treasured classic is reimagined in a whimsically illustrated graphic novel adaptation perfect for newcomers and kindred spirits alike.

When Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan who can help manage their family farm, they have no idea what delightful trouble awaits them. With flame-red hair and an unstoppable imagination, 11-year-old Anne Shirley takes Green Gables by storm.

Anne’s misadventures bring a little romance to the lives of everyone she meets, her bosom friend, Diana Barry; the town gossip, Mrs. Lynde; and that infuriating tease, Gilbert Blythe. From triumphs and thrills to the depths of despair, Anne turns each everyday moment into something extraordinary.

My Review

I did not grow up with Anne of Green Gables, so I had never actually read the story before. When I was younger, it honestly never seemed like something I would enjoy. But after joining the online book community, I kept hearing BookTubers and reviewers rave about Anne and this series, especially during the spring and summer months. This year, I came across the graphic novel adaptation and decided it would be the perfect way to finally experience the story before diving into the original book. And… I absolutely loved it!

I did not expect to fall so hard for Anne, Matthew, Marilla, and Diana, but by the end, I was completely attached to all of them. Anne’s personality is so vibrant and lovable, and I quickly became invested in her world and the people around her. While the art style was not entirely my favorite, the graphic novel itself was still beautiful, with such vivid and vibrant colors. Some pages felt a little crowded with speech bubbles and text, but it never distracted from my enjoyment of the story.

Even though the story spans all four seasons, Anne of Green Gables just feels like spring and summer to me. I was fully in my cottagecore reading mood this spring, and this ended up being the perfect book to match that atmosphere. The cozy setting, blooming landscapes, and charming small-town vibes made it such a comforting read. This format also worked wonderfully as an introduction to Anne’s world, especially for younger readers. I think children would absolutely adore this version.

I loved this graphic novel so much that as soon as I finished it, I immediately picked up the audiobook of the original story because I wasn’t ready to leave Anne behind yet.

This is part of a graphic novel trilogy available on Kindle Unlimited that also includes The Secret Garden and Heidi. These are such perfect quick reads for spring and summer, or whenever you need a cozy palate cleanser from heavier books. Highly recommend!
