Summary

Love isn’t blind, it’s just a little blurry.

Sadie Montgomery never saw what was coming . . . Literally! One minute, she’s celebrating the biggest achievement of her life—placing as a finalist in the North American Portrait Society competition—the next, she’s lying in a hospital bed diagnosed with a “probably temporary” condition known as face blindness. She can see, but every face she looks at is now a jumbled puzzle of disconnected features. Imagine trying to read a book upside down and in another language. This is Sadie’s new reality with every face she sees.

But, as she struggles to cope, hang on to her artistic dream, work through major family issues, and take care of her beloved dog, Peanut, she falls into—love? Lust? A temporary obsession to distract from the real problems in her life?—with not one man but two very different ones. The timing couldn’t be worse.

If only her life were a little more in focus, Sadie might be able to find her way. But perceiving anything clearly right now seems impossible. Even though there are things we can only find when we aren’t looking. And there are people who show up when we least expect them. And there are always, always other ways of seeing.

My Review

I have been reading Katherine Center’s books for several years now, and I finally found my first five-star read from her. This is, without a doubt, my favorite book of hers so far.

I listened to the audiobook, and once again, Patti Murin delivered a phenomenal performance. She continues to be one of my favorite narrators because she brings so much personality and emotion to every character. Her narration added another layer of charm to an already wonderful story. As with most Katherine Center books, there is some language, but readers looking for a romance without graphic spice will be happy to know this one stays firmly in the closed-door category.

The story follows Sadie, an up-and-coming artist who specializes in painting portraits. Just as she receives a coveted opportunity to compete in a potentially life-changing art competition, her world is turned upside down. After an accident leaves her with a head injury, she undergoes surgery and wakes up to a diagnosis of acquired apperceptive prosopagnosia (aka face blindness). Suddenly, she can no longer recognize the faces of the people around her.

Sadie was such an easy character to root for. My heart broke for her as she struggled to adjust to this new reality while trying to hold on to the life and career she loves. One of the things I admired most about her was her determination. She hates asking for help and wants to remain independent, but she slowly learns that accepting support from others isn’t a weakness. While she certainly has moments of frustration and grief, she approaches her challenges with resilience, humor, and an admirable determination to keep moving forward.

Of course, this wouldn’t be a Katherine Center novel without a swoony romance. Sadie finds herself caught between two wonderful men. One is her veterinarian, who helps her care for her beloved aging dog, Peanut. The other is a neighbor who makes a terrible first impression but gradually starts to reveal a much softer side. Watching these relationships develop was one of my favorite parts of the book. The romance is charming, funny, and full of heart. There is plenty of chemistry and romantic tension without crossing into graphic territory, which I really appreciated.

I also loved that the story kept me guessing. There was a twist near the end that completely caught me by surprise, and I loved how everything came together in the final chapters.

What I appreciate most about Katherine Center’s books is that they are never just lighthearted romances. Beneath the humor and romance, there are always meaningful themes and valuable life lessons. This story explores identity, resilience, vulnerability, and the importance of human connection in a way that feels authentic and heartfelt. Center has a gift for taking difficult topics and weaving them into stories that are hopeful, uplifting, and deeply emotional.

This book made me laugh, swoon, and tear up more than once. By the end, I was completely invested in Sadie’s journey and didn’t want the story to end.

If you enjoy romances with emotional depth, personal growth, lovable characters, witty banter, sweet romance, and meaningful life lessons, I highly recommend picking this one up. It is easily my favorite Katherine Center book to date and one I’ll be thinking about for a long time.
