My Review

This was my first time reading this author, and I was completely blown away by how deeply this story affected me. It’s my first five-star read of 2026, and it absolutely earned that spot. I’ll definitely be picking up more of her books soon.

In terms of content, there’s no language or spice, which I appreciated. However, sensitive readers should be aware of heavier themes, including domestic abuse, child abuse, and child abandonment. The story is darker and more emotionally intense than I initially expected, but those elements added a powerful depth that made it all the more meaningful.

This is very much a character-driven novel. While the plot itself is fairly quiet, the heart of the story lies in watching this family navigate life, love, and complicated relationships. Set during the Depression Era, it offered a glimpse into a time period I don’t often read, which made the experience feel even more immersive and unique.

The story unfolds through multiple points of view and shifts between past and present timelines, yet it remains easy to follow. At the center is Eliza, a widow living on an orchard farm with her three young children. After enduring life under her abusive father-in-law, she’s suddenly left to manage the farm on her own after his death, with everything at risk. When a mysterious, injured man named Gabe appears, she takes him in and nurses him back to health. As he begins helping around the farm, his presence brings both support and unanswered questions. I loved trying to piece together who Gabe really was, even though I didn’t guess correctly.

We’re also introduced to Aunt Batty, a woman who lives in a small cottage on the orchard and helps care for the children. Her backstory adds another layer to the novel, and her unwavering faith, wisdom, and gentle humor make her a truly memorable character. She brings warmth and light to an otherwise heavy story, along with many thoughtful and encouraging reflections.

The characters are what truly make this book shine. Eliza is resilient and deeply human, carrying the weight of her past while continuing to fight for her family. Aunt Batty offers both wisdom and levity, and Gabe’s quiet, mysterious nature adds intrigue. Each character feels complex, authentic, and emotionally raw. The faith elements are woven in beautifully, offering messages of hope, perseverance, and grace without feeling overwhelming.

Overall, this is a tender, emotional, and deeply moving story about love, resilience, and faith. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it gave me those soft, swoony moments as well. While the romance is subtle, it’s incredibly meaningful. The multi-generational aspects add richness, and the themes of sacrifice, forgiveness, and enduring love linger long after the final page.

At times, the story feels heavy and even painful to read, but that’s exactly what makes it so powerful and unforgettable.

I can’t wait to read more from this author. Highly recommend!!
