Our Strange Duet centres Christine’s emotional journey and her agency within this sweeping, atmospheric opera.
My Review
WOW!!! I was completely blown away by this historical gothic romance! I honestly don’t even know where to begin because I loved EVERYTHING about this book!
If you’re a fan of The Phantom of the Opera, whether it’s the Broadway musical or the movie, you absolutely MUST check out this beautiful reimagining. And I’m going to say something I rarely say about books: The audiobook is the ONLY way to experience this story!
I’ve listened to hundreds of audiobooks over the years, and this one might just be my absolute favorite. I’m not exaggerating when I say that the audio production was a MASTERPIECE!
We get a full cast of incredibly talented narrators, sound effects, atmospheric music, and even singing! It honestly felt like I was sitting in a theater listening to a Broadway production rather than an audiobook. The performances were phenomenal, and every little detail brought this haunting story to life in the most incredible way.
I’ve never experienced an audiobook quite like this before. It was truly something special, and I was completely captivated from beginning to end. I could NOT stop listening! I flew through it in just a few days because I constantly wanted to return to this world and these characters. If every audiobook had this level of production, I don’t think I’d ever stop listening!
As far as content goes, there is no language and no spice, which I really appreciated. This is categorized as a young adult novel, although I think adult readers will absolutely love it, too.
I also want to clarify that this is NOT a fantasy novel. There are no actual fantastical or magical elements in the story. We do get some dreamlike sequences that blur the lines between reality and imagination, giving certain scenes an almost otherworldly quality. However, at its heart, this is a historical romance with wonderfully dark and atmospheric gothic elements.
And oh my goodness, the ATMOSPHERE!
This story was haunting, mysterious, immersive, romantic, and just the right amount of eerie and creepy without becoming too dark. I absolutely loved how the author captured that unsettling gothic feeling while still giving us such a beautiful, emotional story. The writing was gorgeous, and I felt completely transported into Christine’s world.
What makes Our Strange Duet so special is that we experience this reimagining entirely through Christine’s point of view. I loved this creative decision because it allowed us to really get inside her head and understand her thoughts, desires, fears, and motivations. Rather than simply watching her story unfold, we get to experience everything alongside her.
We learn so much more about her ambitions, her dreams, and the reasons behind the choices she makes. I especially enjoyed getting a deeper look into her everyday life as part of the corps de ballet, her relationships with the people around her, and her experiences as a Norwegian orphan trying to find her place in the world.
Her interactions with Raoul and his family were particularly interesting because they highlighted the enormous social and class differences between them. Those details added so much depth to the historical setting and helped me better understand the challenges Christine faced.
I also loved how the author explored Christine’s complicated relationship with her mysterious Angel of Music.
One of the biggest differences I noticed between this book and the 2004 movie adaptation was how slowly Christine begins to recognize the truth about the man behind the voice. In the movie, her innocent perception of her Angel of Music begins to unravel almost immediately after she enters his lair. But in Our Strange Duet, that realization happens much more gradually.
Even after seeing the truth with her own eyes, Christine struggles to reconcile the beautiful voice she’s come to trust with the darker reality of the man behind it. I thought this was such an interesting and compelling way to explore her character. Her innocence, vulnerability, and conflicting emotions felt much more developed, and I loved watching her slowly come to understand the truth.
I genuinely felt like this book gave me a much deeper and more intimate experience with Christine’s story than what I’d seen in the 2004 movie. To be fair, that’s my only previous experience with The Phantom of the Opera, so I can’t compare it to the original novel or Broadway production. But I absolutely loved the additional character development, historical details, and emotional depth we get in this reimagining.
In fact, listening to this audiobook made me want to rewatch the movie all over again! I even found myself watching a few clips on YouTube while listening to the book because I wanted to compare certain scenes and hear the full musical numbers. While the audiobook does include music and singing, we only get snippets throughout the story rather than complete songs. Those little musical moments were wonderful, though, and they added so much to the overall experience.
I could honestly go on and on about everything I loved, but I think this is one of those books that’s best experienced knowing as little as possible. I don’t want to spoil any of the beautiful details, emotional moments, or surprises that make this story so special. Part of the magic is allowing yourself to get completely swept away by the atmosphere, the characters, and the incredible audio production.
If you love The Phantom of the Opera, complicated love triangles, historical gothic romance, haunting atmospheres, and beautifully written stories filled with emotion and mystery, you NEED to pick this one up.
And if you’re an audiobook lover, please, PLEASE listen to the audio version! I cannot emphasize enough how extraordinary this production is. It’s so much more than someone narrating a book. It’s an entire theatrical experience that brings the story to life in a way I’ve rarely encountered.
This is easily one of my favorite books of the year and, without question, one of the BEST audiobooks I’ve ever listened to!
I’ve been a huge fan of this author for quite a while now, but this book completely solidified why I love her writing and storytelling so much. She has such an incredible talent for creating richly atmospheric worlds, compelling characters, and hauntingly beautiful stories that stay with you long after you’ve finished reading.
At this point, she’s officially an auto-read author for me. I will happily pick up anything she writes! If you’re ever in the mood for a beautifully written, atmospheric, slightly eerie gothic story, I highly recommend exploring her books.
I’m still thinking about this one, and I have a feeling I’ll be thinking about it for a long time. I honestly wish I could experience this audiobook again for the very first time because it was THAT good.
ALL THE STARS!!! An unforgettable five-star read and an absolute masterpiece of an audiobook! I cannot recommend it enough!!!
