The Rules of Courtship
by Kasey Stockton

Summary
In the game of love, the heart seldom abides by the rules…
Ruth Wycliffe always thought falling in love would be easy. But after countless introductions and no promising prospects, she’s starting to lose hope. Desperate for a change, she strikes a deal with her good friend, Oliver at an upcoming house party, they’ll help each other find the perfect spouse.
Oliver has always followed society’s rules—until now. Helping Ruth should be easy, but the more time they spend together, the more complicated things become. Suddenly, finding a spouse doesn’t seem so simple when he’s starting to wonder if the perfect match has been right in front of him all along.
But love was never part of their arrangement, and when Oliver uncovers a devastating secret, he knows he can never ask Ruth to choose him. Marrying her would mean tying her future to his uncertain fate, and walking away is the only honorable choice.
But some risks are worth taking, and some hearts are worth fighting for. Will Ruth and Oliver hold to the plan—or risk everything for a love that defies the odds?
My Review
I absolutely adore this Regency romance series, and this third installment was so much fun to return to. Kasey Stockton’s writing has this effortless, immersive quality that makes it so easy to slip into her world. The rich descriptions, from the elegant settings to the fashion and social activities, made every scene feel vivid and transportive. I also really appreciate knowing I can trust her books to be clean, closed-door romances with no surprises when it comes to language or spice.
Ruth was such a delight to follow. She is warm, strong, and just the right amount of quirky, which made her incredibly easy to root for. I loved her self-made “rules,” and how they shaped her decisions, but even more than that, I loved watching her grow beyond them. Her journey felt personal and relatable, and there were moments that genuinely resonated with me. Seeing her evolve and find her happily ever after was deeply satisfying.
The story does start on the slower side, but once it reaches the halfway point, it really finds its stride. The added layers of family drama, long-buried secrets, and unexpected reveals brought a touch of mystery that made it hard to put down. From that point on, the pacing picked up, and the stakes felt much more engaging.
I came very close to giving this five stars because it is my favorite in the series so far, but something kept it just shy of that mark. The slower beginning made it a bit harder to fully settle in, and at times, the miscommunication between characters felt frustrating. I found myself wishing they would just talk to each other. Even so, those moments did not take away from my overall enjoyment.
While this could be read as a standalone, I do think reading the series in order adds depth and makes the experience even more rewarding, especially with familiar characters appearing throughout the story or being mentioned. It would be helpful to be acquainted with characters from the first two books.
If you’re in the mood for a clean, wholesome Regency romance with a sweet, charming friends-to-lovers romance, a bit of family drama, and a heartfelt happily ever after, I would absolutely recommend this book and the series as a whole. It feels like the perfect read for spring or summer, and the covers are just as lovely as the stories inside. Highly recommend!
