Summary

She was never meant to be a lady. But love has a way of rewriting the rules. For fans of My Fair Lady.

New York City, 1883. Keira O’Day has spent her life scraping by in the tenements, haunted by the mystery of her parents’ abandonment. When wealthy widow and social climber, Maude Hill, offers her a daring proposition—to be adopted, polished, and presented as a society bride for an English lord—Keira sees an opportunity she can’t pass up.

Maude’s nephew, Alexander Paxton-Hill, is skeptical from the start. Tasked with teaching Keira the art of charm and flirtation, he soon finds himself captivated by her honesty and warmth as she challenges everything he thought he knew about love—and about himself.

After navigating the glittering, treacherous world of New York society, Keira arrives in England and catches the eye of the elusive Duke of Severton. She’s poised to win everything until a lavish ball, a long-buried secret, and one reckless act of love threaten to unravel it all. Now Keira must play the role she’s been prepared to play—or the woman she’s become.

My Review

Gabrielle Meyer is one of my all-time favorite historical fiction authors. She is an auto-read/buy author for me. So the moment I saw she was launching a new series, I was instantly excited. The fact that the books are based on classic musicals and available on Kindle Unlimited just made it even better.

I absolutely loved this book. It blends the charm of My Fair Lady with the elegance of Downton Abbey and the glamour of The Gilded Age. Since Downton Abbey is my all-time favorite series, this story completely swept me away. In fact, it left me so nostalgic for that world that I immediately began rewatching the series for the fourth time after finishing this book. But while reading this book, I never wanted it to end. It beautifully captures the richness of the Gilded Age, the complexities of high society, and the emotional journey of a woman as she finds her place within it.

Keira is such a compelling heroine, having grown up on the “wrong side of the tracks.” When she catches the attention of socialite Maude Hill, everything changes. Maude proposes an arrangement: she’ll adopt Keira and transform her into a refined lady worthy of marrying into nobility. In return, Maude maintains her influence and prestige within elite society. On the surface, it seems like a perfect arrangement, but of course, it’s not quite that simple.

Alexander, Maude’s nephew and the male lead, was one of my favorite parts of the story. He serves as the voice of reason, often pushing back against his aunt’s ambitions and questioning the process of reshaping Keira into someone she’s not. At the same time, he steps in to help, teaching her how to dance, converse, and navigate society. He’s thoughtful, charming, and genuinely cares about Keira’s well-being. Watching him slowly fall for her was such a joy, and their interactions were filled with sweet, swoony moments.

Keira herself is incredibly easy to love. Despite being thrust into a world of luxury and expectations, she remains grounded, kind, and true to who she is. She never loses her authenticity, and I loved watching her grow as she wrestles with what she truly wants out of life. Her journey feels heartfelt and satisfying from beginning to end.

The romance is definitely a slow burn and a bit predictable, but honestly, that’s part of what made it so enjoyable. It’s tender, heartfelt, and full of those quiet moments that make you smile.

I also really appreciated the subtle thread of faith woven throughout the story. Meyer has a gift for incorporating themes of God’s love and guidance in a way that feels natural and uplifting rather than heavy-handed or preachy.

I was completely immersed in this book and flew through it in just a few days. It made me laugh, tear up, and swoon in all the best ways. Between the romance, the rags-to-riches storyline, the richly drawn settings, and the meaningful themes, this was such a delightful read.

I loved everything about it and cannot wait to continue with the series. Highly recommend!
