2023 Mid-Year Freak-Out Book Tag

Welcome, my book friends!

To listen to my full answers, you can check out the entire episode on The Bookmarks ‘n Blankets Podcast on your favorite podcast platform or listen below.

If you want to share your best and worst books or movies of the year, you can head over to either Instagram or X (aka Twitter) and comment on my posts.

If you’re part of the online book community and on social media platforms, then back in June, you probably saw a huge amount of videos and posts with the mid-year freak out book tag. I know a lot of book reviewers and content creators do this book tag every year. I watched a lot of these videos a couple of months ago, and they were a lot of fun to see which books people like the most and the least, which ones made them smile and cry, which ones were big disappointments, and which ones they are looking forward to reading in the future.

I didn’t do this episode back then because June was not the halfway point of my reading year. I joined this online book community in March, so my reading year is only going to be ten months this year instead of twelve. So now, in this month (August), I’m at my halfway point, so I thought now would be a good time to do this book tag, even if it’s delayed compared to the rest of the online book community.

This book tag has a list of questions to answer, and I’ll be choosing books from what I’ve read from March through July. It will not include any books that I’ve read this month, since it’s technically my sixth month.

Mid-Year Freak-Out Book Tag

How many books have I read so far? How am I doing on my reading goal? I have read 35 standard books and 4 graphic novels for a total of 39 books – all physical copies. My goal is 50 books this year.

Keeper of Enchanted Rooms by Charlie Holmberg

GR Description: Rhode Island, 1846. Estranged from his family, writer Merritt Fernsby is surprised when he inherits a remote estate in the Narragansett Bay. Though the property has been uninhabited for more than a century, Merritt is ready to call it home—until he realizes he has no choice. With its doors slamming shut and locking behind him, Whimbrel House is not about to let Merritt leave. Ever.

Hulda Larkin of the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms has been trained in taming such structures in order to preserve their historical and magical significance. She understands the dangers of bespelled homes given to tantrums. She advises that it’s in Merritt’s best interest to make Whimbrel House their ally. To do that, she’ll need to move in, too.

Prepared as she is with augury, a set of magic tools, and a new staff trained in the uncanny, Hulda’s work still proves unexpectedly difficult. She and Merritt grow closer as the investigation progresses, but the house’s secrets run deeper than they anticipated. And the sentient walls aren’t their only concern—something outside is coming for the enchantments of Whimbrel House, and it could be more dangerous than what rattles within.

Buy Now

GR Description: Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock ’n’ roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.

New Releases I Haven’t Read But Want To:

The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston

Buy Now

GR Description: Sometimes, the worst day of your life happens, and you have to figure out how to live after it.

So Clementine forms a plan to keep her heart safe: stay busy, work hard, find someone decent to love, and try to remember to chase the moon. The last one is silly and obviously metaphorical, but her aunt always told her that you needed at least one big dream to keep going. And for the last year, that plan has gone off without a hitch. Mostly. The love part is hard because she doesn’t want to get too close to anyone—she isn’t sure her heart can take it.

And then she finds a strange man standing in the kitchen of her late aunt’s apartment. A man with kind eyes and a Southern drawl and a taste for lemon pies. The kind of man that, before it all, she would’ve fallen head-over-heels for. And she might again.

Except, he exists in the past. Seven years ago, to be exact. And she, quite literally, lives seven years in his future.

Her aunt always said the apartment was a pinch in time, a place where moments blended together like watercolors. And Clementine knows that if she lets her heart fall, she’ll be doomed.

After all, love is never a matter of time—but a matter of timing.
