We have made it! We have started the Ber months, and now we’re heading into my absolutely FAVORITE time of year. I’m so happy that summer is over, even though the weather hasn’t changed yet, I’m seeing more and more fall-inspired videos and content pop up from my favorite BookTubers and content creators. It just puts me into the autumnal mindset and makes my heart smile.
I love the feeling of the fall season. It makes me feel so warm and cozy. I can’t wait for sweater weather, watching the leaves turn colors, eating and drinking everything pumpkin and apple (Starbucks has a new iced pumpkin cream chai tea latte and their apple crisp latte), getting my fall decorations out, using autumnal-scented hand soaps, and curling up with my blankets and a good book.
September Reading Theme
As for types of books this month, I don’t necessarily have a theme. Half of the books on my list are highly anticipated books that I just wanted to read. BUT, the other half were chosen by my husband. I saw some other readers post on social media or make videos where they had their spouse or family member or friend choose their books. So I thought it would be fun to include my husband in my choices this month. He’s been part of my new reading journey because I don’t really have anyone else to talk to about the books that I read, so he definitely gets an earful from me when I’m done reading books, or something happens in the book world, or there’s interesting news in the book community. So I chose about 20 books of various genres and age ranges and told him to read the summaries and pick five. So that’s what he did. He also chose three graphic novels for me to read, but I’ll reveal what those are and my thoughts at the end of the month in the wrap-up episode.
September To Be Read (TBR) Book List
I’m super excited for this month’s choices because I’m finally diving back into my two favorite genres: fantasy and mystery/thriller/horror. I also have a mix of adult, YA, and middle grade that I’ll be reading this month.
Dear Henry, Love Edith by Becca Kinzer

Why I Chose This Book: One of my favorite BookTubers had this book on her TBR list and after hearing her thoughts about it and then reading the description, immediately, I knew I wanted to read it. I believe it does take place during the summer, and I thought about swapping this title with another one back in July when my monthly reading theme was Summer Vibes or Summer Vacation, but I already had my TBR list put together and didn’t want to move anything around. So, I’m getting to it now. Then, that same YouTuber came back and told us that she read it in one day and gave it five stars and now, it’s one of her all-time favorites. Then I saw some other BookTubers talking about it, so I knew I had to read it soon. I do have high hopes for this one and am anticipating it to be a five-star read.
I love the miscommunication trope and mistaken identities trope. It sounds like such a cute, sweet, wholesome book. I don’t believe there’s any language or spice in it, which I appreciate. I’m really hoping for a great clean, modern romance story since I haven’t been the biggest fan of this genre.
*I really wanted to try a couple of sports modern romance books because I’ve never read any, and with football season starting, which is my favorite sport, I thought I’d give these next two books a try.

Why I Chose This Book: I’ve been hearing so much about Sarah Adams as she’s another Queen of Modern Romance stories, and I think she’s a clean romance writer. Everyone has been talking about two of her newer released books, When in Rome, and Practice Make Perfect, but I went with this older one (2021) and it feels like it fits the fall vibes that I’m looking for during this time of year.
At first, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the friends to lovers trope, but it’s growing on me. I’m still curious about it and want to try some different authors, especially if they are clean romance writers. I also like the fake dating trope. It’s always fun to see how things escalate and are taken to another level that the couple have to endure and figure out. Usually, these can be some pretty funny scenes. So I’m hoping for another light-hearted, funny, sweet love story. It’s probably going to be predictable, like most of these romcom books are, but if it’s executed well, then I don’t mind if it’s predictable.

Why I Chose This Book: This is another highly, highly recommended sports romance book that was recommended by one of my favorite BookTubers. She also tries to read clean romance books and she said this one was very clean and really well-written with mature characters that know how to communicate with each other. I think a lot of my problems with modern romance books are that they are written by and for millennials with millennial (or zennial) characters, so for someone like me, in my mid-forties (Gen X), it just feels immature, lacking in emotional intelligence, lacking experience in relationships, and even juvenile at times. So any book that is the opposite of all those things, I will probably enjoy more. Again, I have high hopes for this book based on the BookTuber’s recommendation. She’s spoken about this title multiple times, so it must be good, right?! We shall see…

Why I Chose This Book: I’m finally getting back into middle grade books. I haven’t read a lot lately. I read one last month, but I’m excited to get back into fantasy books and fantasy middle grade. This book, I think, is considered a classic in the middle grade fantasy realm. I’ve heard so so many book reviewers talk about this one and reference it or compare it to other fantasy books that they read. So I really wanted to see what all the hype is about.
I also know it’s a very, very popular movie, which I plan to watch, with my husband, after I read the book. I heard that the movie is quite different from the book, but I’m all here for both. I’ve never seen any Studio Ghibli movies, and so many BookTubers that I follow talk about them that I’m ready to try a few and see what I think. I will be watching the Japanese version with the subtitles because that is its original form. I really hate dubbed movies, but I’m really looking forward to checking out this book and movie.

Why I Chose This Book: When I was doing some research on spooky books and fall reads and watching videos from last year, there were quite a few BookTubers who recommended this one. It’s historical, gothic, fantasy, romance, horror – all rolled together in a duology. It sounds really intriguing. I’m slowly becoming a fan of gothic books and I’m definitely a huge fan of historical fantasy and just historical fiction overall. So I thought I would give one a try.
It sounds like it could be a little gorey and gross, but I hope it’s not too graphic. But I would love to be spooked a little bit, like I was with Mexican Gothic. It sounds so dark and creepy. Perfect for going into the Spooky Season.

Why I Chose This Book: I don’t have much to say on why I chose this one because Charlie Holmberg has become one of my favorite authors, and she’s an auto-buy author, meaning anything she puts out, and I will read it. So when I heard that she had a new release, I knew that I had to pre-order it and that it absolutely had to go on my list this month. However, the plot sounds really intriguing too. I’ve never really read anything with trolls in it, so I’m excited to explore another area of fantasy (outside of The Hobbit and Harry Potter).

Why I Chose This Book: This book has a huge amount of hype around it, which makes me skeptical but also very intrigued. Also, vampires. As embarrassing as it may be for me, I’ve never read a vampire book, so I’m pretty excited to dive into this one. This is the first book of a duology. I’ve heard some pretty mixed reviews about it, but overall, I think there’s more positive reviews than negative. I’m just so excited to hop back into fantasy books that honestly, I don’t really care. I just want to read it. I have heard there are some pretty spicy scenes, which is a bummer, but hopefully, it’s not too graphic.
Some reviewers have described this story as Hunger Games meets Twilight, which I haven’t read either of those series yet, but I have seen all of the movies. I’ve also heard that it is a slow burn romance, which I’m fine with because I really don’t want to read a cheesy romance fantasy book. Another BookTuber mentioned that the romance in this story takes more of a backseat, which sounds good to me. I’m not on TikTok but I guess there’s also been a lot of hype over there around this book. So I’m excited to see if it’s as good as everyone is raving about. If it is good, then I’ll definitely get the sequel.

Why I Chose This Book: After reading Lisa Jewell’s book, Then She Was Gone, back in June, I was dying to get my hands on another one of her books. Honestly, I want to read her entire backlist at some point. This is Lisa Jewell’s newest release that came out just last month. I pre-ordered it so I would be ready to read it this month. This is another book that I have really high expectations for. Then She Was Gone was 4.5 stars for me, not quite a 5-star, but very, very close. So I want to see if this one will reach that top-tier status for me.
What really interested me the most about this book is that the main character is in her mid-forties, AND she is a podcaster. So I feel like I’ll absolutely be able to relate to the main character not just in age but also in terms of the podcasting. I’ve already heard amazing things about this book, so fingers crossed that it doesn’t disappoint. I’m ready for some twists and turns and another wild story from this author.

Why I Chose This Book: This is another author that I’ve heard talked about so much, especially in this mystery/thriller/horror genre, so I’ve been dying to read his books. Many of the BookTubers that I follow just rave about his books. I know he just had a new release, The Only One Left, but I decided to start with his most popular title. I’ve heard this is pretty scary and perfect for a spooky read. I’m going into this one with pretty high expectations. It might even be a five-star read, so we’ll see.
I love a good mystery and thriller. I also love this idea of an apartment building not being what it seems with a dark, secretive past to discover and unravel. I’m not sure if this is about a psycho killer or a ghostly haunting, but I’m excited to find out.

Why I Chose This Book: This is another author that I’ve heard so much about and really, really wanted to check out. I’ve heard amazing things about his books. He’s supposed to be a humorous horror writer, so I’m expecting to laugh as much as be freaked out. The title alone of this book sounds really fun. I’ve already read that there are dolls or puppets in this, which sounds like Chucky vibes or Deadly Silence, if you’ve seen those movies. Definitely not that scary but there are some jump scares here and there. I don’t think Grady Hendrix’s books are supposed to be taken seriously, so I’m hoping for a lighter comedy horror read. If I end up really liking this one, there are a few others of his that I have on my TBR list that I may push to the top.

Why I Chose This Book: This was a book that I chose back in June as part of my mystery & thriller reading theme, but just didn’t have the time to get to it. I’m still very interested in reading it, especially because there’s puzzles and a mystery to solve, maybe a romance, so I’m excited to finally read this one. This is book one of a trilogy. I have the first two novels, but still need to get the third one, and I believe a fourth book, which is a companion book, is coming out soon.

Buddy Read: The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

Why We Chose This Book: I told my friend that I had never read a vampire book, and she said we had to fix that (lol). I recommended this one because I’ve seen so many book reviewers praise Grady Hendrix’s books and say that he’s a really good horror. It has mixed reviews, but I’m still interested in reading it. So now I have two of his books on this month’s list. Hopefully one (or both) is good.
I think my friend is also going to read Sunshine by Robin McKinley this month, which I’m interested in reading. It’s a YA vampire book. But I told her that I probably don’t have time to read two books with her, and I’d rather read the Grady Hendrix book if I had to choose one.
Conclusion
*I also have quite a few NetGalley books to read, so I’m hoping I can get to those. One is a middle grade fantasy, one is historical fiction and horror, and one is a holiday modern romance book. Plus, there are a few more. I’ll talk more about those in my wrap-up episode at the end of the month if I can get to them.

Wow, I have an ambitious reading month! I’m honestly shocked at how much I have on this TBR list. I think I’ve bitten off more than I can chew, but we’ll see how it goes. I’m excited for all of these titles and hope to read them all at some point even if it’s not this month. I’m also really happy to be getting back into fantasy and mystery/thriller/horror books, especially given the time of year that we’re in.
Well, there you have it, my fellow bookworms – all the books I’m attempting to read in September. Many of these books are giving me the fall vibes that I’ve been wanting as we turn the corner into the cooler months and head into Spooky Season.
