RTR: Reading BookTubers’ Best Books: Part 2

I follow many BookTubers on YouTube. I’ve started a series where I read their favorite books of 2024 to see what I think of them. This is the second installment.

Welcome, book friends!

To listen to my real-time reaction to these books, you can check out the full episode on The Bookmarks ‘n Blankets Podcast on your favorite podcast platform or listen below.

I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books if you’ve read them. I invite you to hop over to  X (aka Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram, where you can comment.

My second episode of my Real-Time Reactions series, BookTubers’ Best Books, is here!
(You can read/listen to the first episode here.)

As someone who loves watching BookTube, I follow a wide range of creators who share their reading journeys, recommendations, and beloved favorites. Now that 2024 is over, I thought it would be fun to dive into their top picks from last year, reading their favorites myself and sharing my reactions in real time.

Not every BookTuber ranks their choices or selects a single standout, so in those cases, I chose the book that caught my attention most (and was available to me). My aim with this project is to sample a variety of genres, see if my experience matches their glowing reviews, and hopefully uncover some new favorite reads along the way.

In this episode, I chose these BookTubers and read their favorite books from last year:

Book Summary

In Pride and Prejudice, the Bennett sisters try to find their way in the repressive strictures of 19th-century society. Austen shows the folly of judging by first impressions and the experience of falling in love, and she superbly describes a world which, despite being more than two centuries old, still resonates with modern concerns.

Book Summary

When Elizabeth Bennet first knew Mr. Darcy, she despised him and was sure he felt the same. Angered by his pride and reserve, influenced by the lies of the charming Mr. Wickham, she never troubled herself to believe he was anything other than the worst of men–until, one day, he unexpectedly proposed.

Mr. Darcy’s passionate avowal of love causes Elizabeth to reevaluate everything she thought she knew about him. What she knows is that he is rich, handsome, clever, and very much in love with her. She, on the other hand, is poor and can expect a future of increasing poverty if she does not marry.

The incentives for her to accept him are strong, but she is honest enough to tell him that she does not return his affections. He says he can accept that–but will either of them ever be truly happy in a relationship of unequal affection?
