Try a Chapter - Choosing from 5 Gothic Fantasy Books to Read (Adult & YA Novels)

I’m embracing the dark, atmospheric vibes of autumn by exploring five gothic fantasy novels in search of my next favorite read.

Welcome, my sweet book friends!

If you’d prefer to listen to this book list, you can check out the full episode on The Bookmarks ‘n Blankets Podcast on your favorite podcast platform or listen below.

I invite you over to X (aka Twitter), Facebook, or Instagram to let me know what you thought of any of the books on my list, what you’re reading this month, or what your favorite summer romance book is.

******************

As the weather cools down and the days grow shorter, I’ve been craving something a little darker and more atmospheric lately. Gothic fantasy feels like the perfect genre for this time of year, with its mysterious settings, haunting atmosphere, dark magic, and unsettling secrets.

But with so many intriguing books on my TBR, choosing what to read next isn’t easy! So, I’m trying something a little different with a Try a Chapter reading challenge.

I’ve picked five gothic fantasy novels that have caught my attention, and I’ll be reading the first chapter of each one to see which story pulls me in the most. Will it be the eerie atmosphere, intriguing characters, or a mystery I can’t resist?

It’s time to explore some dark and magical worlds and hopefully discover my next favorite gothic fantasy read.

What Is Gothic Fantasy?

Gothic fantasy blends fantasy’s magic and supernatural elements with the dark, mysterious atmosphere of Gothic fiction. These stories often feature eerie castles or mansions, ancient secrets, dangerous forests, family curses, ghosts, forbidden magic, and characters who never quite know whom they can trust.

Atmosphere is a huge part of the genre. Gothic fantasy often feels haunting, immersive, mysterious, and sometimes romantic. The setting can almost become a character of its own.

Why Is Gothic Fantasy So Popular?

Gothic fantasy gives readers a chance to escape into a world that feels beautiful and unsettling at the same time. There is often a mystery to unravel, supernatural elements to discover, and a constant feeling that something isn’t quite right.

It’s also especially popular during autumn because the darker settings, old houses, foggy landscapes, secrets, magic, and eerie atmosphere fit perfectly with the mood of the season. Readers who want something darker than cozy fantasy but don’t necessarily want full horror can find that perfect middle ground in Gothic fantasy.

Book Summary

Edira Brillwyn is a threadmender. She holds a rare, lifesaving power that can cure disease and heal injuries in the blink of an eye. But magic always comes with a cost, and saving anyone sacrifices a sliver of her own life. She’s always kept her abilities hidden…until the powerful Fernglove family discovers her secret.

The Ferngloves are charming and beautiful, possess powerful magic, and don’t take no for an answer—especially Orin, the head of these ruling elites. When Edira’s brothers unexpectedly contract blight—an incurable virus killing people throughout the town, and an illness too strong for her to heal them both—Orin offers to help. Together at his estate, they’ll research a cure while Orin slows their sickness and Edira hones her magic. His kindness and honesty surprise Edira, as does her undeniable attraction to him.

But the other Ferngloves are suspicious of her power and may be more dangerous than the ever-present disease. The longer Edira stays within the confines of the Manor, the more the family’s pristine exterior begins to crack—until Edira discovers a terrifying secret and must choose who she can save and at what cost…

In this debut gothic fantasy, the first book of an enthralling fantasy romance trilogy, a young woman who can see the dead strikes a deal with a magnetic and dangerous purveyor of dark secrets to save her brother’s life.

Three years ago, Leena Al-Sayer awoke with a terrible power.
She can see the dead.

Since then, she has hidden herself from the world, knowing that if she ever reveals her curse she will be locked away in an asylum.

When her beloved brother, Rami, falls fatally ill, Leena is faced with a terrible CHOICE: Let him die or buy the expensive medicine that will save his life by bartering the only valuable thing she has—her secret.

The Saint of Silence, a ruthless merchant who trades in confessions and is shrouded in unearthly rumors of cruelty and power, accepts her bargain, for a deadly price. Leena must find the ghost of Percival Avon, the last lord of Weavingshaw—or lose her freedom to the Saint forever.

As Leena’s search takes her and the Saint to Weavingshaw, she finds the estate and the surrounding moors to be living things—hungry for blood and sacrifice. Fighting against Weavingshaw’s might, Leena must also fight her growing pull toward the enigmatic Saint himself, whose connection to Percival Avon remains a mystery.

As the house begins to entomb them, time is running out on their desperate hunt for answers. For Leena has come to see that here in Weavingshaw, the dead are not hushed—and some secrets are better left buried with them.

Seventeen-year-old Viridia Solace has trained for years to hunt these reapers, but their ranks keep growing, led by the man who murdered her parents: the notorious Reaper Priest.

When the Priest’s most loyal follower, Reeve Ashton, is captured, he offers Viri a chance to avenge her parents . . . for a price. She knows better than to bargain with a reaper, let alone this reaper, but his offer is too good to resist.

Soon she’s breaking him out of prison, colluding with his crew of magic thieves, and following him deep into the blackmist forest in search of an ancient legend, all so they can stop the Reaper Priest’s plot to doom the city. Book Summary

A reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, spotlighting Christine Daaé as she rises to fame while torn between love, ambition, and the haunting secrets of the opera house, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Erin A. Craig.

Inspired by Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel, Le Fantôme de L’Opéra, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a mysterious masked figure who lurks beneath the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it.

He falls madly in love with a young soprano, Christine Daaé, and devotes himself to nurturing her extraordinary talents, employing all of the devious methods at his command.

Our Strange Duet centres Christine’s emotional journey and her agency within this sweeping, atmospheric opera.

Final Thoughts

I had so much fun exploring these five gothic fantasy books! The more I read from this subgenre, the more I fall in love with its dark, mysterious atmosphere, haunting settings, and captivating stories. Gothic fantasy has quickly become one of my favorite types of fantasy to explore, and I’m already looking forward to discovering more books in the future.

There’s something especially appealing about reading gothic fantasy during autumn and the colder months. It’s the perfect time to curl up with a cozy blanket, a warm drink, and an eerie, atmospheric story that transports you into a dark and mysterious world. I love getting completely immersed in these haunting settings, where secrets lurk around every corner, and there’s always a sense that something unsettling is about to happen.

This little reading experiment reminded me just how much I enjoy discovering new stories, and I have a feeling my gothic fantasy TBR is only going to keep growing!

Happy Spooky Reading!
